Seth Dembar
My current work, method was conceived by watching my daughter create and destroy her art as a child. Reminding me of my own childhood, clay sculptures in the day, smashed (deconstructed) into the recycled to the clay bucket at night. Only to start again in the morning. Life and death. Creation and destruction. Freedom of exploration being paramount. I use representation and abstraction using mediums and techniques from different artistic disciplines creating variant results. Work which often subscribes to the dematerialization of the object. Where background and subject merge. In the studio I begin by building assemblages using found objects, painting, drawing, and sculpting with wire and clay. I then capture the sculpture or painted composition with a high-resolution digital camera. Here with minimal photoshop edits I create the final file which is printed on any number of materials. Adding paint to the images is a free-flowing part of my process connecting me with my lifelong love of painting. The combination of disciplines contributes to the final product in disparate ways ā photography capturing subtle lighting, paint, a more direct line, and layers of color. Accident, freedom, discovery, and the intentional handling of the camera, lighting, brush, paint and other materials and tools to create the final product are integral to my process. Being lost and out of control assists me to go places I hadn't imagined, influencing the end result. The compositions are sometimes simple, other times more complex. Digital capture gives me immense freedom to choose from my library to manipulate and create a unique piece. I can go to any place in the piece that Iād like, and pull from any iteration of the assembly, print, and paint.
