Andrew Muonio

Life long San Francisco Bay Area resident Andy Muonio was raised in East San Jose part of a working class family of thirteen. He is proud to have received his education locally, from an AA in illustration at Evergreen Valley College to his BS in Illustration, BFA in Pictorial Art and MFA in Pictorial Art all from San Jose State University, and he is also proud to have had the opportunity to teach in these institutions. Andy Muonio had a long career as a illustrator. Beginning his career working for Sunset Magazine then an editorial artist for the Peninsula Times Tribune. After the newspaper he worked as a freelance illustrator, Graphic Arts Instructor and Director of Creative services in high tech. He then returned to university to complete his masters and begun his second career as an Assistant Professor of Art and an artist; a painter and print maker. Now a retired arts educator, having taught students of all levels from elementary to university, he continues his life long work as a painter. His artwork is eclectic, from abstract to portraiture and landscapes, but always contains the importance of color and the mark of the brush, from small monotypes to large paintings. “I fell in love with drawing the figure from comic books and begin my artistic goals in high school becoming a technically proficient artist in drawing and painting. It wasn't until I begin to learn more about the formal aspects of art in junior college that I fell in love with American Abstract Expressionism. It is these two things that have informed my work since, a dichotomy of a direct figurative story against a formal layout of color and the mark.” - Andy Muonio
