Colleen Martin
Abstract expressionism captivated my attention at an early age and continues to influence and inspire my work, mostly on mid-size canvases and with oil paint. At times I incorporate other ink and gesso, and on smaller projects I’m open to anything: including acrylic paint, charcoal and pastels, pencil, etc. Painting is a way to play, explore, and discover interior and unconscious moods that aren’t otherwise expressed. Particularly drawn to the work of Philip Guston, Mark Rothko, and Clyfford Still, I admire the strength of presence of the artist and the demand to be seen. I see the insistence of brushstrokes that pull the viewer into a world of the artist’s making — something new, something no longer unnoticed. And within that expanse, a space created to have one’s own experience. That’s what I hope is found in my work — an experience for yourself, and maybe even of yourself.
