Christine Gray

Through my work, I sort through notions of space, matter, and perception within the context of the everyday interior still-life. In my paintings I contrast virtuality with physicality through numerous parallels. I approach painting and drawing with the cut-and-paste methodology of digital design. In my paintings, still-life arrangements are composed of virtual collections of digital images of objects culled from Ebay auctions, gem dealers, and image searches. In abstract passages I describe impossible volumes and interwoven strands of space, tentatively populated by flimsy images of still-life arrangements. These classic still life images are chosen both for their cultural significance and formal qualities.
