Petra Barth

Petra Barth is a German-born fine art photographer based in Washington D.C and Berlin. With an early foundation in painting, she later earned a fashion design degree from the Istituto Marangoni in Milan in 1987. After moving to Washington in 2004, she shifted her focus to fine art photography, studying at the Corcoran College of Art and Design.

Barth’s work examines human, social, and environmental issues in post-conflict communities, intertwining themes of memory and place that reflect her own upbringing. Her imagery—marked by vast landscapes and fleeting natural moments—invites viewers to connect with the essence of a place, where history lingers in light, shadow, and form. By stripping away temporal distractions, her work reveals resilience in everyday life.

She has collaborated with organizations such as UNHCR, GIZ, the Arab Renaissance for Democracy and Development, and Duke University’s Human Rights Center.

Her work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibition including the Climate Change Summit in Paris, the C40 Mayors Summit in Mexico City, the Makerere Art Gallery in Uganda, the Dali International Photography Exhibition in China, the Galleria de Arte Colombo Americano in Colombia, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Organisation of American States and the Haitian Heritage Museum. Her projects The Backpackers (2017) and My Original Face(2019) were exhibited at the Venice Biennale.

Her work is also part of the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library at Duke University.
