Nikolas Soren Goodich

A biracial, Black and Jewish, native of Los Angeles, Goodich hand mono-prints glass paints onto kiln fired glass and acrylic on plexiglass panels, which are then stacked upon one another. This results in a polychromatic mix of color, texture, and mark, formed from the superimposition of multiple layers of hand printed and painted glass surfaces.

Complex visual effects arise from his mixture of matte and gloss finishes, opaque, translucent, and transparent colors, and the natural reflectivity of the glass and plexiglass panels, creating a shifting and changing set of visual experiences. Some works are literally luminous - two-sided and edge-lit with LED lights embedded in their frames, becoming two-sided luminous glass paintings that glow from within - while others are on the wall absorbing and engaging with a spaces ambient light.

Symbolic, abstracted and mirrored profile portraits are the focal point of these simultaneously symmetrical and asymmetrical compositions. The portraits face themselves, look away, or are partially overlaid one over the other, resulting in a complex dialogue. These are gender, race, and age fluid beings, allowing viewers to see themselves and their ideas of identity present in the work, while simultaneously seeing a multiplicity of others there too.
