Keith Wilson

My work is an exploration of the intricate dynamics between human constructions and the restorative essence of the natural world. I strive to weave together these seemingly disparate elements of existence into narrative-neutral compositions. These works, characterized by simple colors and shapes, reflect a distilled perspective drawn from my critical engagement with life. They represent what I term as painterly invention—a form of inner peripheral vision that is expressed and documented. With a foundation in architecture, having received two Architecture degrees from UC Berkeley, I practiced the profession for over 30 years. Throughout my architectural career however, I produced a continuous flow of architecture themed watercolors and drawings; inspiring and complementing my architectural efforts. In 2001, I shifted my focus entirely to painting abstract landscapes in sumi-ink /watercolor. This transition led me to study natural systems, Chinese painting techniques, and philosophical ideals rooted in Buddhism and Daoism and grounded in multiple trips to China and Japan. The most transformative phase of my artistic journey occurred after relocating to Marin in 2012. Under the guidance of Chester Arnold at the College of Marin, I studied advanced oil painting and began a concentrated focus working with oil paint on linen and developed a stronger and more direct way of painting with the potential to increase the size and scale of my work. The methodical mixing and application of paint has brought me closer to an understanding of the true essence of visual reality. The paintings are constructed as they are being painted. Over the last 45 years, I have exhibited my work in numerous solo gallery shows, juried exhibits and open studios. After relocating my studio from Sea Ranch this spring, I am now residing and working full-time in Marin which allows me to focus entirely on my painting and further research.
