Sarah Ammons
My work depicts figures, usually women, involved in some task or activity such as painting, gardening or drinking wine. I pair pattern, figure and objects to give information about who this person is, what she likes, what might be going on in her head. The viewer is asked to decipher the meaning of the relationships between these things. Often there is an underlying sense of mania or hysteria, especially when multiple figures are involved, or a sense of emptiness in an empty can or vacant chair, which is purposefully opposed by the pleasant pastel color palette. This is inspired by my deep interest in advertisements from the 1950s and 60s, a time that was rife with anxiety which was glazed over with a facade of manic delight.
