Lorna Stevens
At the StartUp Art Fair, I propose to exhibit Paradise Drive, an entirely handmade artists’ book combining my paintings and Rebecca Foust’s sonnets. The book is structured on the fourteen line form of the sonnet and includes fourteen poem and watercolor pairings. I made fourteen unique versions of the book and ten digital reproductions at Edition One.
I have created original broadsides of the book pages, which are Dibond mounted for display. Viewers experience the book as they would wall-hung art in a gallery setting. Ten original broadsides of each book page will be available for sale.
In addition, I intend to show five videos pairing the individual strokes of each painting with the sound of the accompanying sonnet read aloud. Viewers see the fourteen strokes become a painting while listening to the poem. The readers, of diverse ethnicities, genders and ages, connect the work to a broader audience. The videos are played from wall-mounted ipads equipped with head phones.
I will also display a large poster drawing attention to The Paradise Drive Matching Game, a self-directed game with two rows of randomly arranged paintings and poems from Paradise Drive. Gamers are challenged to choose the correct poem/painting pairing by pushing a button from each row. Correct responses elicit a lovely ding sound. An incorrect answer produces a less attractive buzz. The Paradise Drive Matching Game is currently available for phone and computer at http://slredux.com/matching/.
