Elissa Lieberman
I am eager to join the ranks of artists who are not content to rest within the rigid confines of a particular style as I continue to bounce back and forth between the figurative and the abstract. I express the sensuality and spirituality of the human form as well as the seductive nature of paint itself. Paint is always a metaphor for the body. I want to create a direct communication with a viewer using expressive faces and bodily gestures and marks. The totality of my different styles of work are linked by an intensity of feeling and the yearning for beauty.
Drawn to portraiture and other figurative art, I am greatly influenced by the Renaissance Masters. My love of gestural mark making and storytelling is informed by the German Expressionists and Abstract Expressionists. My deep knowledge of Art History is evident in my earlier work comprised of large complex narrative depictions of an allegorical and mythological nature. That style gave way to a series of sensual portraits exploring the nature of desire.
More recently I use gestural brushstrokes and an arbitrary but instinctive color pallet in works both narrative, figurative, and abstract. I try to never start a painting the same way twice in order to have an original experience with each painting. I no longer do preparatory studies or drawings for paintings. However, drawing itself is the core of my love of art. Recently I have discovered the spiritual, mystical, and aesthetic qualities of painting abstract. This work engages the senses and creates atmosphere. My philosophy is that art is ground on which many layers of the psyche can be expressed both literally and figuratively.
