Cary Reeder

Capturing and conveying an ephemeral, transitory state is the focus of my work. I am keenly interested in how color impacts emotion, and how light, shadow and space create an ever-changing picture plane.

As I get older, the sense that time, health and life are fleeting becomes ever more apparent. Shadows in my work, both on surfaces and those created by the works themselves, represent change and transition. Color continues to build on this narrative. I use contrasting and complementary elements that create visual interest, discord and tension, while other works play with color interaction and optical illusion. With installations, translucent vinyl creates spontaneous color mixtures, and with 3D portal works, kiln-formed glass and hand-cut paper create constantly changing cast shadows. I offer the viewer a moment into a fragile, jarring, hopeful space.
