Barbara Maricle
My Continental Drift Series of abstract oil paintings depicts fantastic landforms and waterways. The series is inspired by aerial photography, cartography, geology and movement and imagines the shapes of Earth’s past or future continents.
My broader interest is in how we perceive and navigate space. I love to plan routes using maps for hiking or travel as well as soaring over the Earth using Google Earth. Another series of mine evokes maps and travel routes.
My process is influenced by abstract expressionism and begins as an exploration of spontaneous mark-making, line and form. The paintings evolve into areas that may depict continents, islands, bays, seas, mountains, deserts and cities.
